Monte's Story
My story starts in Culver City, after graduation in '56 got married to Donna Tilton, Class of '55. We had three children
one passed away Corie- two left a boy(Devin) Albq, New Mexico and Shana, Las Vegas. My wife passed away Oct. 7th,
2010 - she had parkinsons, scolosis and carpal tunnel syndrom.. Currenty live in Marietta, Georgia for 27 years.
Looking to get back West. We had to postpone our move due to Donna's health. We were both 19 when we got
married. We lived in a few areas, corporate moves: Chico, San Jose', Sacramento, Hawaii, Reno and Atlanta. It still
hurts that Donna is not here, she has gone on to a higher place and her pain is gone. I miss her so. We met on a
slave day. I was bought by three girls - one was going steady, another already had a date, so Donna was the
third choice to take to the Slave Dance- I always have said I'v been a slave to her from that day on. What a trip it was.
A little more to the story- My mother, who was a starlett in Hollywood also worked at Curries Ice Cream Polar. She had a best friend, will get to that in a moment. I had a scholarship to Texas A&M or George Washington University.
My parents did not want me to leave, being an only child. So, I joined the 49th Mobilized Artillary and became a
secretary to the Captain. I could type very good and write reports to Washington DC. After my Honorable Dis-
Charge I asked Donna to marry me. She said yes, I went home to tell my parents and my father said no. But my mother said yes. You know who won...Expand for more
that battle. Remenber, my parents had not even met Donna. So my mother
asked, what are her parents name, I mentioned her mothers name is Anita. My mother said what is her maiden name - Donna told me "Hawkins". My mother ask me for Donna's home phone and called to talk to Anita. It turns out that her best friend at Currys Ice Cream Palor was the same Anita. And to think it all started on a Slave Day.
To think that both our parents ended up in Culver City - I had to live it to know it really happen. Love to all.
Well, some of you have probably put two and two together. How could I serve in the Miliary and still get married at
19 years of age. When I joined the military, several months later during basic trainning my right knee started to
swell. I was sent to an orthopedic surgeon. The report came back that I had osteomalightis (sp) the same problem
Mickey Mantel had when he played for the Yankees Baseball Team. So I got an Honorable Discharge due to my
standing with my unit. I know this dosen't look like it is in the best order - I'm flying by the seat of my pants. Yes I
did get my college completed, even if I had to do it at night school. Completed two degree programs - one in
marketing and the other in Food and Bevergage Management. I was with Brown-Forman Distillers for many years.
I was the only one to receive two President awards for B-F Sales and Jos. Garneau Imports. Retired from B-F.
All the best to Culver Hi and the wounderful teachers and students that touched all our lives. Monte
